What is Kubb?
Kubb is a Swedish lawn game with a nickname that pretty much says it all: Viking chess. Two teams, a handful of wooden blocks, and one King standing in the middle. The game mixes the aim of horseshoes, the satisfaction of bowling and just enough strategy to make every throw matter. Simple to learn, hard to stop playing—and around Eau Claire, much more than just a backyard game.

How Eau Claire Became Kubb City
It started with a Kubb set, a love for the game, and a city that had no idea what was coming.
After spending time in Sweden, Eric and Erin Anderson moved to Eau Claire in 2007 with Kubb in tow. They were new to town, the game was new to the area, and it turned out to be a pretty good way to bring people together. That summer, Eric organized Eau Claire’s first Kubb tournament. Just 35 players and 15 teams showed up. Small beginnings for what would become a very big Eau Claire thing.
The tournament grew quickly, moving from park to park as more teams joined in. Eventually, it became the U.S. National Kubb Championship and found a home at Eau Claire Soccer Park. In 2011, Eau Claire made its relationship with the game official, earning the title "Kubb Capital of North America."
And Kubb didn’t stay on the tournament pitch. It found its way into parks, schools, backyards, and casual games around town, becoming one of those wonderfully unexpected things that feels distinctly Eau Claire.
Fast-forward to today, and that little tournament has welcomed players from across the country, tied a world record with 144 teams, and helped put Eau Claire on the international Kubb map. And in 2027, the U.S. National Kubb Championship is celebrating its 20th year.
Not bad for a game that first came to Eau Claire in 2007.
01
Set the Field
Place five kubbs along each team's baseline and put the King right in the center of the playing field.
02
Choose Your Side
Split into two teams and take your places behind opposite baselines. Now you're ready to throw.
03
Toss the Batons
Take turns throwing wooden batons underhand at your opponent's baseline kubbs. The goal? Knock 'em down.
04
Send Them Back
Knocked-down kubbs get tossed onto the other team's half of the field, where they're stood back up as field kubbs.
05
Clear the Field
Before aiming for the baseline again, knock down any field kubbs on your opponent's side. Then keep working your way forward.
06
Go for the King
Once you've knocked down all of your opponent's kubbs, it's time for the King. Knock it over to win—but hit it too early and you lose!
